A good spot for your cutting roses

Plant roses for your cutting garden in a spot that gets at least six hours of sun a day. Some varieties tolerate partial shade; check the rose’s care advice for details. Choose a spot where you can easily reach the plants to cut flowers, water them and prune them.

Roses grow best in fertile, well-drained soil. Work compost into the soil when planting and water generously. Rose fertilizer and plenty of water during dry spells will support growth and new blooms.

How to cut roses for the vase

Ideally, cut roses in the cool morning, when the plants are well hydrated. Choose flowers whose buds are showing color and whose outer petals are starting to open. For densely petaled varieties, a slightly more open flower may open better in the vase.

Use clean, sharp pruning shears and place the stems in clean water straight away. Leave enough healthy foliage on the plant so the rose can continue to grow.

Keep your freshly picked roses looking lovely for longer

Use a clean vase and remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline. Recut the stems at an angle and add flower food according to the instructions on the package. Check the water daily and change it regularly.

Place your bouquet in a cool spot, away from direct sunlight, heaters and ripening fruit. This gives your freshly picked roses the best start in the vase.

Roses for cutting in pots on your balcony or patio

You can pick roses even without a large garden. Choose a compact shrub rose and a spacious, deep pot with drainage holes. Roses in pots need regular watering and feeding. Keep in mind that a small plant will produce fewer stems for cutting than a mature shrub planted in the ground.
