Charles de Mills at a glance
Rosa ‘Charles de Mills’ stands out for its large, almost flat flowers. The densely packed petals form a beautiful quartered pattern, in rich shades ranging from magenta-red to deep wine red and purple. Its classic old-rose fragrance makes this historic garden rose especially appealing.
This Gallica rose is generally dated to around 1790. According to Lens, it appeared in French catalogues around that time as ‘Bizarre Triomphant’. Who Charles de Mills was and why the rose was later given his name remains a mystery. The original breeder is also unknown.
Charles de Mills blooms once each summer and forms a full shrub with upright, gracefully arching branches. It is perfect for a romantic border or informal rose hedge. Give it enough space so that its broad growth and distinctive flowers can be fully appreciated. It also tolerates light partial shade.
Forty years of nothing but roses
Belle Époque is a family business, not a wholesaler. From our greenhouses in Aalsmeer, we have been growing only roses for over four decades — and every plant we send out is personally selected by us. This way, you receive not a catalog rose, but a plant ready to grow.
"Beautiful climbing rose, bloomed abundantly in the very first year! Well packaged and exactly what I expected based on the description. Belle Époque truly delivers top quality."
"The rose is well packaged and looks beautiful. Fast delivery, and the personal advice via email was very valuable — I wasn’t sure where to plant it."
