Nutrition for roses: lime as essential support for strong roses
Roses need the right nourishment to bloom richly and stay healthy. Lime is an important part of a balanced rose diet, as it helps regulate the soil’s pH level and improves nutrient uptake. Discover how lime makes your roses stronger and supports them for a long time.
How much lime do your roses need?
The amount of lime you give depends on the soil type and acidity (pH level). A few guidelines:
-
Light sandy soil: about 50 grams of lime per rose bush per year.
-
Heavy clay soil: up to 100 grams per bush per year, because clay needs more lime.
-
Acidic soil: if the pH is low (below 6), you may add some extra lime.
With a package of 900 grams you can supply the right amount of lime to up to 15 rose bushes per year.
Tips for using lime as part of rose nutrition
-
When to apply: scatter lime in early spring (March/April) and possibly once more in autumn (September/October).
-
How to apply: spread the lime evenly around the base of the bush, but avoid direct contact with the stem.
-
Watering: water after scattering so the lime is absorbed into the soil faster.
Roses and soil pH
A good pH level is the foundation for healthy roses. The ideal pH lies between 6.0 and 6.5. With a simple soil test, you can find out exactly how much lime your garden needs.

Roses in pots
A potted rose is a rose plant that has already been grown in a pot and is delivered with a well-developed root system. These roses are ready to be planted directly in the garden or in a larger pot, without having to wait for root growth. This makes the potted rose ideal for planting throughout the year, especially from May through October.
Roses with bare roots
Bare-root roses – also called root roses – are rose plants delivered without a pot or soil. These roses are dormant and can be planted directly in open ground. The best time to plant a root rose is in autumn or early spring, when the soil is still moist and the temperature mild.
At Belle Epoque we supply bare-root roses from November through April. Thanks to the well-developed root system and the right planting conditions, these roses grow vigorously into healthy and bloom-rich bushes or climbing roses.
Products are shipped directly from the nursery every Monday and Wednesday. By delivering only twice a week, we reduce logistical emissions and optimise our processes. This benefits both the quality of our products and the climate.
