About Pretty Black

Rosa ‘Pretty Black’ (Meifainoir PBR) is a modern creation from the renowned French rose breeder Meilland. This exceptional rose is considered the improved successor to the popular ‘Black Baccara’. Under the right conditions, its deep red flowers turn almost black and have a luxurious, velvety appearance.

The semi-double flowers grow to approximately 7–8 cm and contrast beautifully with the healthy, dark green foliage. From June onwards, ‘Pretty Black’ blooms abundantly well into autumn. The flowers have a light fragrance and also attract bees and butterflies.

Reaching a height of approximately 60–90 cm, this shrub rose remains beautifully compact. It grows bushy and upright, making it suitable for borders, rose beds, and as a solitary focal point. Its dark flower color also comes into its own beautifully in a large pot on the patio or balcony. The sturdy stems additionally make ‘Pretty Black’ suitable as a cut rose for stylish bouquets.

Plant Rosa ‘Pretty Black’ in a sunny location in fertile, well-drained soil. Regular watering and fertilizing ensure healthy growth and a long-lasting, abundant bloom.

At Belle Époque, you can buy Rosa ‘Pretty Black’ directly from the rose nursery in Aalsmeer. With more than 40 years of family experience, we select and grow strong, high-quality garden roses. This way, you receive a healthy rose that you can enjoy for many years.

Would you like to buy an almost black rose that combines elegance, mystery, and modern growing strength? Then Rosa ‘Pretty Black’ is an impressive choice for your garden, patio, or balcony.

Care & Plants
Plant bare-root roses from October to April, and potted roses throughout the year, as long as the ground is not frozen. Dig a spacious planting hole, enrich the soil with compost, and ensure that the graft union (the swelling between roots and stems) is just below ground level. After planting, water generously and maintain a planting distance of about 40-50 cm for a beautiful, full growth.
Prune Rosa ‘Pretty Black’ in early spring, around March or April, after the last severe frost. Completely remove dead, diseased, or weak branches and cut back the remaining main branches to 3-5 buds above the ground, or about 10-15 cm. During the season, you can remove faded flowers to encourage new blooms.
Water Rosa ‘Pretty Black’ regularly during dry periods and in the first year after planting, especially in container culture. Fertilize the rose twice a year with special rose fertilizer: once in early spring and again after the first bloom to encourage continuous flowering. A layer of mulch around the base helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Forty years of nothing but roses

Belle Époque is a family business, not a wholesaler. From our greenhouses in Aalsmeer, we have been growing only roses for over four decades — and every plant we send out is personally selected by us. This way, you receive not a catalog rose, but a plant ready to grow.
