Care & Plants
Plant bare-root roses from October to April; potted roses can be planted year-round, as long as the ground is not frozen. Choose a sunny spot with well-draining, nutrient-rich soil. Dig a spacious planting hole, enrich the soil with compost, and ensure that the graft union (the swelling at the base of the stem) is just below ground level for optimal protection.
Prune 'Bring Me Sunshine' in early spring, as soon as the worst frost has passed. Remove dead, damaged, or weak wood and thin out the shrub for an open structure. Shorten the remaining branches to 1/3 to 2/3 of their length, just above an outward-facing bud. Remove faded flowers throughout the season to encourage new blooms.
Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first year after planting. Fertilize in early spring and again mid-summer with a special rose fertilizer for optimal blooming and growth. A layer of mulch around the base helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.
