Planting roses in the autumn

Rozen planten in de herfst - Belle Epoque

Planting roses in the autumn

Autumn is traditionally the season in which you plant roses. Fresh from the field, the selection at the rose nursery is largest, and planting before the first frost gives the best results.

Bare root roses

A rose is what you call a biennial crop. After the second year, we harvest the roses from the field. The roses are pruned at height, dug up, rinsed with water, and stored moist in refrigeration. Because the rose has no root ball, we refer to them as bare or naked root roses. Plant our beautiful garden roses or the growth and bloom rose now and enjoy these blooming champions for many more years!

Advantages

Planting roses in the fall has the advantage that the soil is still warm, allowing the roots to establish before winter. This causes the rose to sprout earlier in spring and be better protected against frost. Also, the selection of special and rare rose varieties is largest during this period, and bare root roses are cheaper than potted roses.

Buying bare root roses

Bare root roses are available for purchase - depending on the temperature - from November through March. We package the roses moist in a sealed bag with a box around it. You can store the roses in a cool place for a few weeks, but of course, they can also be planted immediately. On this page we explain how to plant a bare root rose. View our assortment here.
