Planting Bare Root Roses: Step-by-Step Guide for Open Ground
Share
Root Preparation Start by placing the roots of your bare root roses in a bucket of cold water before you begin planting. This will help hydrate the roots and prepare them for their new environment.
Step 1: Dig a Planting Hole Loosen the soil well with a spade and dig a sufficiently large hole. Make sure the hole is wide enough so that the roots can lie freely without being folded double. The depth should be such that the grafting point (where the large side shoots start) is approximately 5 cm below the ground. This prevents wild growth and protects the rose from frost.
Step 2: Add Garden Soil Using your other hand, add 3 to 4 handfuls of garden soil or rose soil to the planting hole.
Step 3: Press the soil Press the soil firmly with your foot so that the soil closes nicely around the plant's root hairs.
Step 4: Water Give the rose plenty of water so that the root becomes nicely moist. Repeat this especially in periods of drought, except when it freezes.
