Ulrich Brunner at a glance
Ulrich Brunner Fils stands out for its large, full flowers in a vibrant cherry red, sometimes with pink and lilac nuances. The flowers open from a rounded bud into a deep cup. A strong rose fragrance with fruity notes makes it particularly appealing to lovers of fragrant garden roses.
This historic rose was introduced in 1881 by the French breeder Antoine Levet, in the middle of the Belle Époque. It is also known by the shorter name ‘Ulrich Brunner’. As a hybrid perpetual, it represents an important group of nineteenth-century roses: large, classic flowers with the ability to bloom again later in the season.
The shrub grows vigorously and upright, with long, almost thornless branches. Its flowers grow on sturdy stems and are suitable for cutting. Just a few flowering branches make a generous, fragrant bouquet.
Ulrich Brunner Fils produces its first flush from June, followed by further waves of bloom throughout summer and autumn. It looks lovely at the back of a romantic border or as a focal point in a classic rose bed.
Give it a sunny, airy spot in fertile, well-drained soil. Light partial shade is tolerated. Remove spent flowers and water at the base during dry periods. Adequate feeding helps this vigorous shrub produce more flowers.
Forty years of nothing but roses
Belle Époque is a family business, not a wholesaler. From our greenhouses in Aalsmeer, we have been growing only roses for over four decades — and every plant we send out is personally selected by us. This way, you receive not a catalog rose, but a plant ready to grow.
