Souvenir du Dr Jamain has an exceptional, deep flower color. Its double blooms range from dark wine red to purple, with a velvety appearance. As they open further, a few golden-yellow stamens sometimes become visible. A powerful rose fragrance with fruity notes makes it even more appealing.

This historic rose was introduced in 1865 by French rose breeder François Lacharme, a few years before the beginning of the Belle Époque. It belongs to the Hybrid Perpetual group: an important class of nineteenth-century roses that combines classic, double blooms with repeat flowering.

Its dark blooms look particularly beautiful in light partial shade. Protection from the intense midday sun helps prevent the petals from scorching. A spot with morning sun is therefore a good choice.

Souvenir du Dr Jamain grows upright, with long, flexible, almost thornless branches. You can grow it as a large shrub or train it along a fence or trellis with support. Pair it with soft pink or white flowers to highlight its deep color.

Flowers appear in successive flushes from June onward. This historic rose does require some attention: it can be susceptible to leaf diseases and benefits from ample nutrients, water, and good airflow around the branches. Plant it in humus-rich, well-drained soil and remove spent flowers to encourage further blooming.
