About James Galway (Auscrystal)

The James Galway® is one of the most beloved climbing roses in the David Austin collection. With its large, classic fully double, soft pink flowers, delightful rose fragrance, and vigorous growth, it brings timeless elegance to any garden. The richly blooming clusters give a romantic appearance and make this English rose a true eye-catcher against a pergola, rose arch, or facade.

What makes this rose extra special is the story behind its name. Like many David Austin roses, this variety is named after a well-known British personality. James Galway is named after the world-famous Northern Irish flutist Sir James Galway, also known as The Man with the Golden Flute. He is considered one of the greatest flutists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and served for many years as principal flutist with the Berlin Philharmonic under Herbert von Karajan. To celebrate his sixtieth birthday, David Austin named this special climbing rose after him. During its introduction at the Chelsea Flower Show, Sir James Galway was personally present and enhanced the presentation with his characteristic flute playing.

Like the musician, the rose exudes class, refinement, and timeless beauty. The large, soft pink flowers open in graceful rosettes and emit a rich, classic rose fragrance. Moreover, the plant is almost thornless, healthy, and particularly vigorous, allowing it to easily grow into an impressive climbing rose.

Thanks to its strong growth, James Galway® is very versatile. Train it along a pergola, wall, fence, or rose arch, or let it grow into a large shrub rose in a border. It also thrives excellently in a spacious pot on a terrace or patio. From early summer well into autumn, it continues to produce new flowers.

At Belle Époque Rozenkwekerij, we cultivate our roses with more than forty years of craftsmanship and passion for exceptional garden roses. From our nursery in Aalsmeer, we deliver strong, healthy roses directly from the grower. Thanks to our careful selection and sustainable cultivation, you are assured of a vigorous plant that will grow for years into one of the highlights of your garden.

Thus, James Galway® is not only a stunning English climbing rose but also a living tribute to one of the world’s greatest musicians – a rose that uniquely combines beauty, fragrance, and history.

Care & Plants
Preferably plant the 'James Galway' rose in the fall (October-November) or early spring (March-April) as bare root. Potted roses can be planted year-round, provided the ground is not frozen. Ensure sufficient planting distance (about 70-100 cm for a shrub, depending on the desired width) and soak the roots in water briefly before planting.
Prune the 'James Galway' in early spring, around March, when the worst frost has passed. Remove dead, diseased, or crossing branches and cut back the main branches by about one-third to maintain a compact shrub. If it is a climbing rose, train the main branches horizontally and prune the side shoots back to 2-3 buds for abundant flowering.
Provide a nutritious, well-draining soil. Water regularly and deeply during dry periods, especially in the first growing year. Fertilize in early spring and after the first bloom with special rose fertilizer, and mulch the base with compost for extra nutrients and moisture retention.
