James Galway is named after the world-famous Northern Irish flutist Sir James Galway, also known as The Man with the Golden Flute. He is considered one of the greatest flutists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and served for many years as principal flutist with the Berlin Philharmonic under Herbert von Karajan. To celebrate his sixtieth birthday, David Austin named this special climbing rose after him. During its introduction at the Chelsea Flower Show, Sir James Galway was personally present and enhanced the presentation with his characteristic flute playing.
