Discover the enchanting charm of Rosa ‘Mutabilis’, a special Chinese rose that transforms the garden with its unique play of colors. This rare variety, offered by Belle Epoque, is known for its fascinating trait: the flowers change during their blooming from soft amber yellow to copper pink and finally to deep crimson red. This creates a lively painting of colors – a dynamic scene that seems constantly in motion.

With its elegant, open growth habit and the graceful bronze-colored young leaves, ‘Mutabilis’ forms a charming addition to any garden. The flowers resemble butterflies that alight on the plant – an effect that earned it the nickname “The Butterfly Rose” .

This repeat-flowering shrub rose grows to about 120–150 cm tall and blooms from early summer to autumn. It is healthy, sturdy, and only requires a sheltered, sunny location to thrive fully.

The origin of ‘Mutabilis’ is shrouded in mystery – it likely comes from China before 1894, and was only officially introduced in Europe in 1934. It has since become one of the most beloved historic roses, praised for its natural elegance and color play.

Roses in pots

A potted rose is a rose plant that has already been grown in a pot and is delivered with a well-developed root system. These roses are ready to be planted directly in the garden or in a larger pot, without having to wait for root growth. This makes the potted rose ideal for planting throughout the year, especially from May through October.

Roses with bare roots

Bare-root roses – also called root roses – are rose plants delivered without a pot or soil. These roses are dormant and can be planted directly in open ground. The best time to plant a root rose is in autumn or early spring, when the soil is still moist and the temperature mild.

At Belle Epoque we supply bare-root roses from November through April. Thanks to the well-developed root system and the right planting conditions, these roses grow vigorously into healthy and bloom-rich bushes or climbing roses.

Products are shipped directly from the nursery every Monday and Wednesday. By delivering only twice a week, we reduce logistical emissions and optimise our processes. This benefits both the quality of our products and the climate.
