Mainzer Fastnacht® – large-flowered, strongly scented rose
A legendary Aalsmeer cut rose, now back as a garden rose
Mainzer Fastnacht® is a rose with an impressive history in Dutch ornamental horticulture. This large-flowered hybrid tea rose was developed in 1964 by the renowned rose house Rosen Tantau. It soon became clear that this was no ordinary rose: a unique lilac-purple colour, large elegant flowers, and an exceptionally strong, classic rose scent.
The name refers to the famous carnival of Mainz – a celebration of tradition, character, and colour. Exactly that is reflected in this rose.
Millions of specimens grown in Aalsmeer
From the late 1960s, Mainzer Fastnacht® grew into one of the most cultivated cut roses in the Netherlands. In the ’70s and ’80s, this rose was widely grown by rose growers in and around Aalsmeer. During that period, millions of specimens of this rose were produced and traded.
Daily, Mainzer Fastnacht® appeared at the flower auctions of Aalsmeer, Rijnsburg, and Naaldwijk. Because of its distinctive colour and scent, it stood out immediately on the auction clock and was much loved by florists at home and abroad. This makes this rose one of the icons of Dutch cut rose history.
Back to Aalsmeer – for the garden
Over time, Mainzer Fastnacht® largely disappeared from commercial cut rose production. In 2025, Belle Epoque brings this legendary rose back to Aalsmeer, this time as a garden rose. Garden lovers can once again enjoy a rose that for years was the face of the Dutch rose trade.
Flower, scent, and growth
Mainzer Fastnacht® blooms with large, classically shaped flowers in a soft lavender to lilac-purple shade. The scent is intense, full, and nostalgic – a true “old-fashioned” rose scent that you smell before you see the flower.
The plant grows strong and upright and is very suitable for:
-
borders
-
rose beds
-
or as a solitary plant in the garden
This rose blooms repeatedly from early summer into autumn. By regularly removing spent flowers, the blooming remains rich and long-lasting.

Roses in a pot
A potted rose is a rose plant that has already been grown in a pot and is delivered with a well-developed root system. These roses are ready to be planted in the garden or in a larger pot, without having to wait for roots to develop. This makes the potted rose ideal for year-round planting, especially May to October.
Bare-root roses – also called root roses – are rose plants that are delivered without pots or soil. These roses are dormant and can be planted directly in the ground. The best time to plant a root rose is autumn or early spring, when the soil is still moist and the temperature is mild.
At Belle Epoque we supply bare root roses from November to AprilThanks to the well-developed root system and the right planting conditions, these roses grow vigorously into healthy and floriferous shrubs or climbing roses.
Products are shipped weekly on Mondays & Shipped directly from the nursery on Wednesday. By delivering only twice a week, we reduce logistical emissions and optimize our processes. This benefits both the quality of our products and the climate.
