Gallica Officinalis at a glance
Rosa gallica ‘Officinalis’, better known as the apothecary rose, brings colour and history to your garden. Its semi-double flowers range from deep fuchsia pink to carmine red and open around prominent golden-yellow stamens. The classic rose fragrance perfectly complements its simple, natural appearance.
This rose was already known in the Middle Ages. Around the French town of Provins, it was cultivated for centuries for its fragrant petals, which were used in perfumes and historic apothecary preparations. This is where it gets its names ‘Rose de Provins’ and ‘apothecary rose’. In England, it is also known as the ‘Red Rose of Lancaster’.
Its historical value therefore extends beyond its age. Officinalis connects the rose garden with the history of herb gardens, fragrant products and English symbolism. With this rose, you plant a living piece of European garden heritage.
The well-branched shrub blooms once in June and July, then produces decorative hips. The open flowers are attractive to bees. Plant it in a natural border, herb garden or informal rose hedge, in a sunny spot or light partial shade.
Forty years of nothing but roses
Belle Époque is a family business, not a wholesaler. From our greenhouses in Aalsmeer, we have been growing only roses for over four decades — and every plant we send out is personally selected by us. This way, you receive not a catalog rose, but a plant ready to grow.
"Beautiful climbing rose, bloomed abundantly in the very first year! Well packaged and exactly what I expected based on the description. Belle Époque truly delivers top quality."
