About Gertrude Jekyll (Ausboard)

The 'Gertrude Jekyll' (Ausboard) is a David Austin rose that rightfully deserves to be called an icon. From elegant, rounded buds unfold large, intensely pink flowers in a perfect rosette shape, each with a subtle green center that adds extra depth. Its fragrance is truly enchanting: an unusually powerful, classic rose perfume praised worldwide as one of the most intoxicating aromas among English roses. A sensory experience that makes your garden unforgettable.

With its sturdy, upright growth reaching about 150 cm as a shrub rose, the 'Gertrude Jekyll' is an excellent eye-catcher in borders, a beautiful background plant, or an impressive solitary centerpiece in any cottage garden. Its robust character and rich, continuous blooming nature ensure you can enjoy a succession of its fragrant flowers from May to October. Additionally, it can be trained as a small climbing rose, enriching walls or pergolas with its timeless beauty and scent.

At Belle Époque Rose Nursery in Aalsmeer, you buy the 'Gertrude Jekyll' directly from the grower. With over 40 years of family experience in rose cultivation, we guarantee you a top-quality plant, grown with passion and care. We stand for sustainable cultivation and deep expertise, ensuring you a healthy and richly blooming rose that brings joy for years. Choose the expertise of Belle Époque and bring a piece of English garden history into your home.

Care & Plants
Plant the rose in the open ground between October and April (bare root) or year-round from a pot, provided it does not freeze. Choose a sunny spot with at least 6 hours of sunlight per day and nutrient-rich, well-draining soil. Dig a spacious planting hole, enrich the soil with compost, and ensure sufficient planting distance (about 60-90 cm for shrubs) or a suitable climbing structure.
Prune the 'Gertrude Jekyll' in early spring (February/March) when the worst frost has passed. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and cut back the remaining branches to 3-5 buds. Regularly remove spent flowers (deadhead) during the blooming season to encourage the formation of new buds and a rich repeat bloom.
Water the rose regularly, especially during dry periods and in the first year after planting. Fertilize in early spring and after the first bloom with a special rose fertilizer, following the instructions on the package. A layer of mulch around the base helps retain moisture and enriches the soil.
