Care & Plants
Plant bare-root roses between October and April, and potted roses throughout the year, as long as the ground is not frozen. Choose a location with at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. Dig a spacious planting hole, enrich the soil with compost, and ensure that the graft union (the swelling between the root and stem) is just below the soil surface. Maintain a planting distance of about 60-80 cm for a beautiful, full bush.
Prune 'The Mayflower' in early spring, as soon as the worst frost has passed. Remove dead, diseased, or crossing branches and cut back the remaining branches to about one-third of their length to maintain a compact and bushy growth habit. Regularly remove spent flowers (deadheading) to encourage a longer and more abundant bloom.
Ensure a well-draining, nutrient-rich soil. Water regularly during dry periods, especially for young plants and roses in pots. Fertilize in spring and after the first bloom with special rose fertilizer for optimal growth and flowering. A layer of mulch helps keep the soil moist and nutritious.
