About Tess of the d'Urbervilles (XL climbing rose)

The 'Tess of the D'Urbervilles' is more than a rose; it is a legend, a tribute to the English rose artistry of David Austin. Its deep crimson, satin-like flowers, which bloom lavishly from June to October, emit an intoxicating, classic rose fragrance that delights the senses. Although it is no longer in production, this rose, with its robust character and stunning bloom, remains an icon, symbolizing the timeless beauty and passion sought by every rose lover.

Originally cherished as a vigorous shrub rose up to 120 cm, or as an elegant climbing rose that could reach up to 3 meters high, the 'Tess' brought life and color to pergolas, walls, and borders. Its healthy growth and glossy foliage made it a favorite for creating romantic, lush garden corners. Although this specific variety is no longer available, Belle Époque offers a carefully selected range of English roses that can bring the same grandeur and fragrance to your garden.

For over 40 years, generation after generation, we at Belle Époque Rose Nursery in Aalsmeer have been growing the most beautiful roses with passion and expertise. Our sustainable cultivation methods guarantee healthy, bloom-rich plants that come directly from the nursery to your garden. While the 'Tess of the D'Urbervilles' remains a historic gem, we invite you to discover the excellent quality and rich heritage of our current collection of English roses, grown with the same love and expertise.

Care & Plants
Pot roses can be planted all year round, as long as the ground is not frozen. Ensure well-draining soil and dig a spacious planting hole. Place the graft union (the swelling between roots and branches) just below the soil surface and press the soil firmly.
Prune climbing roses in early spring (February-March), before the sap flow starts. Remove dead, damaged, or weak branches and cut back side shoots to 2-3 buds for abundant flowering. Train the main branches horizontally for optimal flower production.
Water young roses regularly, especially during dry periods. Fertilize mature plants in the spring and after the first bloom with special rose fertilizer, or use organic fertilizers and mulch the base for healthy soil.
