Diatomaceous earth for roses – natural aphid control and soil care
You simply sprinkle diatomaceous earth as a powder over your roses. After a rain shower, it partly washes into the soil, where it immediately contributes to better structure and adds extra minerals. This way, you work on healthy, strong roses in two ways at once.
At Belle Epoque, we also use diatomaceous earth in the nursery. It is a fixed part of our natural approach to keep roses strong and resilient, without unnecessary chemicals.
Healthy rose bushes deserve the best care. Aphids and other pests can damage leaves and blooms, but with diatomaceous earth, you choose a 100% natural solution. This versatile powder not only controls aphids, spider mites, and beetles but also improves the soil and supports the growth of your roses.
What is diatomaceous earth?
Diatomaceous earth, also called kieselguhr, is a fine mineral powder made from fossilized remains of microscopic algae (diatoms). It naturally contains silicon, calcium, and magnesium – essential building blocks that contribute to healthy soil and strong plants.
The benefits for roses
Natural aphid control
The microscopically sharp particles damage the protective layer of insects like aphids and spider mites, causing them to dry out. Safe for bees and beneficial insects, provided it is not applied on flowers.
Improved soil structure
Ensures better water retention and aeration, allowing roots to grow deeper and stronger.
Stronger rose plants
The silicon strengthens the plant’s cell walls and increases resistance to diseases and pests.
Fungus prevention
Helps keep leaves drier and reduces the chance of powdery mildew and other fungi.
Applicable in liquid form
Also usable as a spray: dissolve 20 grams per liter of water and mist over leaves and soil for even effect.
Application in the rose garden
- Pest control: sprinkle the powder around the base or on affected parts (in dry weather)
- Soil improvement: mix into the top layer of the soil
- Preventive use: lightly dust over dry leaves
- Liquid use: spray a solution of 20 g per liter of water on leaves and soil

Naturally stronger roses
With diatomaceous earth, you combine natural aphid control with soil improvement in one product. Ideal for anyone who wants to care for their roses sustainably – just like we do ourselves in the nursery.
Roses in pots
A potted rose is a rose plant that has already been grown in a pot and is delivered with a well-developed root system. These roses are ready to be planted directly in the garden or in a larger pot, without having to wait for root growth. This makes the potted rose ideal for planting throughout the year, especially from May through October.
Roses with bare roots
Bare-root roses – also called root roses – are rose plants delivered without a pot or soil. These roses are dormant and can be planted directly in open ground. The best time to plant a root rose is in autumn or early spring, when the soil is still moist and the temperature mild.
At Belle Epoque we supply bare-root roses from November through April. Thanks to the well-developed root system and the right planting conditions, these roses grow vigorously into healthy and bloom-rich bushes or climbing roses.
Products are shipped directly from the nursery every Monday and Wednesday. By delivering only twice a week, we reduce logistical emissions and optimise our processes. This benefits both the quality of our products and the climate.
