Queen Victoria at a glance
La Ville de Bruxelles is a rose for lovers of large, richly filled flowers and a distinctive fragrance. Its bright pink flowers open from a cup shape into a beautiful quartered bloom. Sometimes a small green button eye appears in the center: a special detail that enhances its classic appearance.
This historic Damask rose was bred by the French rose breeder Jean-Pierre Vibert. David Austin lists 1849 as the year of introduction, while Lens Roses dates it to 1837. Both dates place it before the Belle Époque, in the rich tradition of nineteenth-century rose breeding. Its name means ‘the city of Brussels’.
La Ville de Bruxelles retains the character for which old Damask roses are loved: generously filled flowers, a powerful fragrance, and one abundant summer bloom. Its fragrance is sweet and fruity. A spot beside a garden path or seating area makes it easy to enjoy during flowering.
The shrub grows vigorously and upright, with slightly arching branches and plenty of light green foliage. It looks beautiful as a standalone shrub or in a spacious, romantic border. For example, combine it with airy perennials that provide color even after it has finished flowering.
Give La Ville de Bruxelles fertile, well-drained soil and sufficient space. If necessary, prune immediately after flowering so that new branches can develop for the following flowering season.
Forty years of nothing but roses
Belle Époque is a family business, not a wholesaler. From our greenhouses in Aalsmeer, we have been growing only roses for over four decades — and every plant we send out is personally selected by us. This way, you receive not a catalog rose, but a plant ready to grow.
