Gloire de Dijon at a glance
Gloire de Dijon brings warmth and romance to a facade or rose arch. Its large, richly filled flowers combine soft yellow and apricot with pink and golden nuances. They open in a cup shape and later become flatter, revealing the classic quartered arrangement. A strong fragrance with fruity notes makes it particularly appealing.
This famous French climbing rose was developed by Henri Jacotot and his son Pierre in Dijon. After being presented in 1852, it came onto the market in 1853. Its name means ‘the glory of Dijon’: a tribute to the city where it originated.
Gloire de Dijon became a beloved rose in nineteenth-century gardens. In the Netherlands, florists also used its flowers for bridal and funeral bouquets. Its historical significance is underscored by its inclusion in the Old Rose Hall of Fame of the World Federation of Rose Societies.
It starts flowering early and then produces new flushes of bloom until autumn. Train it along a sturdy rose arch, wall, or pergola. A warm spot with sufficient air circulation helps it grow well. The full flowers can be damaged by prolonged rain; a suitable location makes a great difference to this historic beauty.
Forty years of nothing but roses
Belle Époque is a family business, not a wholesaler. From our greenhouses in Aalsmeer, we have been growing only roses for over four decades — and every plant we send out is personally selected by us. This way, you receive not a catalog rose, but a plant ready to grow.
