Empress Josephine at a glance
Empress Joséphine stands out for her large, loosely filled pink flowers. The wavy petals have subtle lilac nuances and pinkish-purple veins, giving each flower a refined appearance. Her fragrance combines the classic perfume of old roses with fruity notes.
This historic rose is attributed to the French rose breeder Jacques-Louis Descemet and dates from around 1815. It was named after Joséphine de Beauharnais, Napoleon's first wife and a renowned rose enthusiast. In the gardens of her Malmaison estate, she collected roses and encouraged interest in these remarkable plants.
The historical value of Empress Joséphine therefore lies both in her age and in her name. She recalls a period when French growers were developing many new roses and collecting roses was becoming increasingly popular. With this variety, you keep more than two centuries of rose history alive.
The shrub grows bushily, with plenty of grey-green foliage and relatively few thorns. It blooms once in summer, after which orange rose hips may appear. Give her a place in a romantic border, where both her flowers and hips can be clearly seen.
Forty years of nothing but roses
Belle Époque is a family business, not a wholesaler. From our greenhouses in Aalsmeer, we have been growing only roses for over four decades — and every plant we send out is personally selected by us. This way, you receive not a catalog rose, but a plant ready to grow.
