Alba Suaveolens at a glance
With Rosa alba ‘Suaveolens’, the name already reveals something about its character: suaveolens means ‘pleasantly fragrant’ in Latin. This historic Alba rose was already in cultivation before 1750. Its precise origin and breeder are unknown, but its white flowers and sweet perfume have retained their appeal for centuries.
Its fragrance also has a practical history. Arboretum Volčji Potok lists Suaveolens as one of the Alba roses cultivated in Bulgaria for the production of rose oil, alongside the better-known Damask roses. This connects it with the craft behind rose perfume.
The bright white, semi-double flowers have lightly ruffled petals and appear abundantly during its single summer flowering period. Suaveolens develops into a broad, vigorous shrub with light green foliage. Give it space in a rural border or informal rose hedge, where its natural appearance can be fully appreciated. A beautiful fragrant white garden rose that also tolerates partial shade.
Forty years of nothing but roses
Belle Époque is a family business, not a wholesaler. From our greenhouses in Aalsmeer, we have been growing only roses for over four decades — and every plant we send out is personally selected by us. This way, you receive not a catalog rose, but a plant ready to grow.
"Beautiful climbing rose, bloomed abundantly in the very first year! Well packaged and exactly what I expected based on the description. Belle Époque truly delivers top quality."
"The rose is well packaged and looks beautiful. Fast delivery, and the personal advice via email was very valuable — I wasn’t sure where to plant it."
"Amazing quality & service. I ordered two New Dawns and they are developing beautifully in the garden. Fast shipping from Aalsmeer to Belgium — would absolutely order again."
