Lady Hillingdon at a glance
Lady Hillingdon brings warmth and elegance to a sunny wall or pergola. Its long, slender buds open into loosely double flowers in apricot-yellow shades. The flowers hang slightly forward, allowing you to admire them beautifully even above eye level. A powerful tea fragrance completes its charm.
The story begins with the original bush rose ‘Lady Hillingdon’, introduced by Lowe & Shawyer in 1910, during the final years of the Belle Époque. In 1917, Hicks introduced the climbing form. It arose as a spontaneous growth variation, also known as a sport, of the original rose. It retained the refined flowers and fragrance but developed a much more vigorous, climbing habit.
The young foliage also contributes to its appeal. New shoots and leaves have coppery to mahogany-red tones, creating a beautiful contrast with the yellow flowers. The foliage later turns dark green.
Lady Hillingdon blooms throughout the summer in successive waves and, in favorable weather, may continue into autumn. Give it a warm, sunny, sheltered position with sturdy climbing support. Train the branches as diagonally or horizontally as possible to encourage flowering side shoots.
For lovers of historic climbing roses, Lady Hillingdon is a special choice: a rose with roots in the Belle Époque, an elegant flower form, and the characteristic perfume of old tea roses.
Forty years of nothing but roses
Belle Époque is a family business, not a wholesaler. From our greenhouses in Aalsmeer, we have been growing only roses for over four decades — and every plant we send out is personally selected by us. This way, you receive not a catalog rose, but a plant ready to grow.
"Beautiful climbing rose, bloomed abundantly in the very first year! Well packaged and exactly what I expected based on the description. Belle Époque truly delivers top quality."
"The rose is well packaged and looks beautiful. Fast delivery, and the personal advice via email was very valuable — I wasn’t sure where to plant it."
"Amazing quality & service. I ordered two New Dawns and they are developing beautifully in the garden. Fast shipping from Aalsmeer to Belgium — would absolutely order again."
