On the way to an organic rose nursery: Belle Epoque and Verschuren join forces

Op weg naar een biologische rozenkwekerij: Belle Epoque en Verschuren bundelen de krachten

At Belle Epoque, we believe in quality, sustainability, and future-proof cultivation methods. That's why we've partnered with Verschuren rose nursery in Brabant to take a significant step forward: growing organic roses.

On a special field, which will soon be largely planted with David Austin rosesThe rootstocks have now been planted. These will be budded this season, which means we are literally laying the foundation for a new generation of organically grown rose bushes.

From November 2026, the first organic bare root roses available. And from May 2027 we also offer organic potted roses A wonderful development for everyone who consciously chooses roses with respect for nature and soil.

For Belle Epoque, this means we can now offer 50% of our collection as organic. The other half will follow a year later: due to limited space, we unfortunately can't switch over completely immediately.

It's also good to know that organic farming comes with its challenges. We expect a loss rate of approximately 30%, which will also impact prices in the coming years. We are, of course, doing everything we can to minimize this loss in the future.

We would like to inform you in advance about something you may notice: roses in pots Roses can sometimes be pruned earlier than you're used to. This is a conscious choice. Buying roses isn't an investment for just the first week in the garden, but for years of enjoyment. Organic cultivation in the open ground is easily achievable, but in pots it's more complex. To keep our roses healthy, we sometimes prune earlier so we develop strong, young plants. This year, organic pot cultivation has gone well. We use nutrients based on Bio Alg, lava meal, and lime, in organic potting soil from Biokultra. So far, this has yielded good results – and we are happy with this choice towards organic production.

Now, over a year after the acquisition of Belle Epoque, we look back on a period in which we fulfilled our wish to expand the webshop to a physical location. The location is now open and will continue to grow in both form and function in the coming years. We are incredibly grateful that more and more people are finding our location—and appreciating it. The contact with customers and enthusiasts of roses brings us a lot of inspiration and valuable knowledge, which we use to improve our web shop and improve services.

Another important ambition is social entrepreneurshipThis hasn't yet been achieved, but it remains a key point in our future plans. We hope to launch the first social projects in 2026 or 2027, in collaboration with regional partners.

These developments fit in with our vision as a specialized rose nursery in Aalsmeer: special rose varieties, directly from the grower, with attention to people and the environment. Whether you roses in pots looking for the terrace, shrub roses for the garden or roses for shady spotsWe are happy to help you choose from a range that is becoming increasingly sustainable.
