A blooming spring begins in autumn
In autumn, nature goes into hibernation. The result is a beautiful display of warm light and color. Spiders are hard at work in their webs, plants lose their leaves, and roses treat us to a delightful display of rosehips and sometimes even rebloom.
Work for roses in autumn
In autumn, we prepare roses for winter and give them a boost for a blooming spring. A wonderful task on a beautiful autumn day.
What do you need?
A good one pruning shears (preferably disinfected with alcohol), rake, spade and gloves are your friends.
Pruning
The purpose of autumn pruning is to protect roses from the winter. It's a simple pruning method and doesn't require much effort. Simply cut the shrub back to knee height. Don't worry about budding. This makes the shrub stronger and therefore less susceptible to frost and wind. Does the thought of cutting off late blooms make your heart ache? Place the flowers indoors in a vase to enjoy them briefly.

Cleaning flowerbeds
Clean flowerbeds are important. Remove fallen leaves and work the soil thoroughly with a rake. An open structure allows nutrients to flow more freely.
To mound
Roses are sensitive to frost. Therefore, cover the bottom 15 centimeters with a generous layer of soil. It's crucial that the budding point is well protected from frost. You can recognize this point by the side branches growing from the root. Only remove this extra protection in March or April during spring pruning.
Planting bare root roses
Autumn is the best time to Plant roses. The soil is still warm, allowing the roots to establish before winter. This gives the rose a head start for the next season.
Rose nurseries
Autumn is a busy time for a rose grower. Roses are harvested as bare roots, rinsed, assessed for quality, labeled, and transported to the cold storage facility where they are well protected. From that moment on, a rose nursery sells bare-root roses. So you're buying fresh plants from the new harvest. An added benefit is that the selection is widest at this time of year. Looking for a special or rare rose? Your best chance of getting it is early November. Belle Epoque offers you the opportunity to reserve your favorite rose in advance.
