David Austin dates it to around 1500. Its Latin name literally means ‘the largest white’ - a fitting name for this imposing shrub rose.

Its history extends beyond the garden. A remarkable historical story behind its delicate appearance.

The double flowers open with a light pink blush and then turn creamy white. Their strong, classic rose fragrance makes the once-yearly summer flowering especially remarkable. Outside the flowering period, the grey-green foliage gives the shrub character. Alba Maxima can also grow very old: a beautiful choice for a garden that is allowed to develop over the years.

Give this historic white garden rose space in a border or informal rose hedge.
